Independent Order of Odd Fellows Second Degree Banner
The symbols that feature on these Second Degree banners are the heart in hand, axe, serpent wrapped around a cross, globe, and the Ark of the Covenant. The serpent is known as the “brazen serpent,” erected by Moses under God’s direction to heal the Israelites when bitten by “fiery serpents” sent among them to “chastise them for their sins.” The serpent is also a symbol of wisdom. The globe represents the universality and worldwide influence of the order. The Ark of the Covenant, holding the Ten Commandments, is an emblem of divine presence.
