This accurately rendered architecture and its surroundings likely evokes the artist’s visual environment, of which he produced many variations from various viewpoints over time. The size and sturdiness of the cardboard on which it is executed suggest that it is an unfolded box of matches (which he regularly used), and the darkness recalls the atmospheric power of Victor Hugo’s watercolors. Interestingly, the subject depicted shows similarity to another one in AFAM’s Blanchard-Hill Collection (1998.10.15). It might be the same building, covered with white wood boards and surrounded with trees and fence. The paper support used in this latter example generates a very different ambience and sensibility</schema:description><schema:artForm>Drawings</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://collection.folkartmuseum.org/objects/7976/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>https://collection.folkartmuseum.org/internal/media/dispatcher/3375/full</schema:image><schema:name>Untitled (Figure with Hat/Figure with Jacket)</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>Early to mid-20th century</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>James Castle</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Soot and saliva on found board (double-sided)</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Drawings</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://collection.folkartmuseum.org/objects/3406/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>https://collection.folkartmuseum.org/internal/media/dispatcher/3374/full</schema:image><schema:name>Untitled (Girl at Easel) (double-sided)</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>Early to mid-20th century</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>James Castle</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Colored pencil on cardboard</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Drawings</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://collection.folkartmuseum.org/objects/4653/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>https://collection.folkartmuseum.org/internal/media/dispatcher/21459/full</schema:image><schema:name>Untitled (Handmade Book)</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1920–1950</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>James Castle</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Soot and saliva on found paper, bound with string</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Books/Manuscripts/Information Artifacts</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://collection.folkartmuseum.org/objects/2753/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>https://collection.folkartmuseum.org/internal/media/dispatcher/2770/full</schema:image><schema:name>Untitled (House, Outbuildings, Trees, and Fence)</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1931–1977</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>James Castle</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Soot and saliva on found paper</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Drawings</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://collection.folkartmuseum.org/objects/2504/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>https://collection.folkartmuseum.org/internal/media/dispatcher/2847/full</schema:image><schema:name>Untitled (Interior Drawing)</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1931–1950</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>James Castle</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Soot mixed with saliva on found paper</schema:artMedium><schema:description>Soot mixed with saliva applied to found paper with handmade tools</schema:description><schema:artForm>Drawings</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://collection.folkartmuseum.org/objects/2754/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>https://collection.folkartmuseum.org/internal/media/dispatcher/3373/full</schema:image><schema:name>Untitled (Jacket) / Untitled (Girl at Easel)</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1931–1977</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>James Castle</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>a: Color of unknown origin and soot on found paper
