Staged with incredible detail in handmade sets or outdoors amidst the nature of upstate New York, Mark Hogancamp’s photographs portraying scenes in the fictional World War II–era town of Marwencol, Belgium, have a cinematic quality. There are visceral episodes of violence on blood-spattered snow, dramatically lit intimate encounters, and moments of daily life as a large cast of characters, ranging from soldiers to heroic local women resisting the occupying Nazis, play out an evolving narrative. Often working at a 1:6 scale, Hogancamp poses dolls and props and constructs buildings with scraps of wood and found materials so that they appear uncannily lifelike in his vivid color photographs. Many feature his tenacious alter ego, the American fighter pilot Captain Hogie, whom he initially created as a way to process the trauma of a brutal attack that nearly killed him.
Hogancamp was born in 1962 in Newburgh, New York, and worked as a carpenter and served a stint in the Navy. In 2000, he was severely beaten by five men outside a Kingston, New York, bar after he revealed his love of cross-dressing. Following five days in a coma, he spent almost two months in the hospital, relearning every aspect of his life. Before the assault, he had been a passionate sketcher, but his injuries made drawing impossible. Building and photographing the miniature world of Marwencol became a creative outlet and a sanctuary of healing, where, with blood made from nail polish and reimagined Barbie dolls and action figures, he was able to be empowered in his recovery. As he stated in a 2019 Sotheby’s interview, “After the attack left me feeling as though I was being kicked off the planet, I wanted to build my own world that only I would understand.”
His work was first published in 2005 in the art magazine Esopus. The 2010 documentary Marwencol, the 2015 book Welcome to Marwencol, and the 2018 feature film Welcome to Marwen brought his work to international attention. Although his focus has shifted away from wartime violence in recent years, he continues to expand and develop the world of Marwencol with its always-growing cast of characters still having more stories to tell.
