These cat- and dog-headed figures—including “Ackie Puss” and “Dogie Bark”—are part of a cast of twenty-four characters inspired by Corbett’s extended family, friends, and the animals on her family farm in Pennsylvania. Most of the drawings are double-sided, with saturated colored pencil and watercolor detail alongside annotations of characters, dialogue, and the date and time of their creation. The works show the influence of popular culture, particularly film, television, and children’s literature, and her homemade scrapbook holds clippings and photographs of the stars of the day.Born in 1930, Corbett spent almost her entire life on a farm in Booths Corner, Delaware County. She worked as a bookkeeper and, in addition to her drawings, is known to have designed and dressed dolls. She kept her art practice private, with 714 drawings coming to light only after the two boxes containing them were removed from her attic and sold at an estate sale, from which they were acquired in 2015 by the architect David Knapp.Corbett was then living in a nursing facility. Before her death in 2019, the new owner of her art was able to connect with her and learn that she had created the drawings from 1942 to 1951, when she was between the ages of twelve and twenty-one. More than a hundred of Corbett’s works on paper, now at the American Folk Art Museum, reveal how she expanded her techniques over time as her art became more sophisticated and less cartoonish, such as in her later ink-wash pieces.Allison C. Meier and Valérie Rousseau, 2025Text written as part of “Rethinking Biography,” an initiative supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
["Booths Corner","Upland
["Booths Corner","Upland
["The oeuvre of Mary Paulina Corbett (1930–2019) has not been publicly revealed yet, nor was it shared with others during her lifetime. Two boxes containing 714 drawings were acquired in an estate sale in 2015 by architect David Knapp, who brought it to the attention of AFAM’s curatorial department in 2017. This idiosyncratic production was created by a solitary teenage girl and young woman, between the age of 12 and 21. The drawings are mostly double-sided colored pencil and watercolor renderings on 8 1/2 x 11 paper. They overlap a ten-year practice, from 1942 to 1951, loosely divided in three time periods that indicate her progression and development. An interview conducted with Ms. Corbett before she passed away, discussions with her cousin, and the review of photo albums kept by her family provide important information about Mary’s life and illuminate the stories depicted in her drawings. Themes are uniform across the collection. They all relate to the adventures of The Catville Kids, represented in daily life scenes like parties, complicated love relationships, group reunions, and leisure. Actions are likely sourced in her own stories growing up on the farm, as well as in American popular films, books, and TV shows from the first quarter of the 20th century, like Hit the Saddle (1937), Ramrod (1947), Odd Man Out (1947), and The Street with no Name (1948). Predictably, Corbett’s scrapbook is covered with clippings and photos of actors Lloyd Bridges, Richard Denning, Robert Newton, Kathleen Ryan, and James Mason. A recurrent character in her drawings is the masked Lone Ranger, who fought outlaws in the American Old West. In Mary’s narratives, he appears in multiple scenes, interacting with a gallery of over 24 fictional characters inspired by her friends, farm animals, and family members (notably her mother Elida, her aunts Ruth and Lida, her cousin Mary). A remarkable aspect of her work is the recurrent presence of human–animal hybrids (upper bodies of cats and dogs), who commonly interact with regular subjects. Such an inclusion in her story is not surprising: the menagerie of furry friends on the family farmland crowded Mary’s relatively reclusive childhood and adulthood.","Mary Paulina Corbett (June 27, 1930–March 30, 2019) grew up - and spent her entire life - in Booths Corner, Delaware County, on the family farmland, until a bad fall triggered her permanent move in a nursing facility in 2013 at age 83. These various details were reported by Mary’s cousin Jeffrey Linton (and his wife Alison): The farmhouse where she lived was built in 1850, and owned since October 1914 by her grandparents William and Mary Latch Linton. Mary’s mother, Jane Elida Linton Corbett, was one of three children (Ruth, William Henry). Her mother, who divorced her father, discouraged her from getting married, so she never did. She was 5’10” and very slender growing up. She worked as a bookkeeper most of her life, and lived alone with her pets that she was close to. She was reclusive, living by herself on the farm. It is not believed that she pursued any art activities, except that she designed and dressed dolls in her later years (some are owned by Jeffrey). Between 2013-2017, estate buyers gathered items in the farmhouse, notably these drawings conserved in two boxes in the attic.
["Mary Paulina Corbett","Mary P.
