Various Miller artifacts have descended through the Groat family. She may be the Catherine Miller born in 1844 to Peter Miller, a wagonmaker, and his wife, Anna Miller, in Troy, New York. The 1875 NYS Census lists Catherine Miller as the wife of O[scar]. B. Smith, a printer, in Troy, Rensselaer County.The first Groot (Groat) was Symon Symones Groot who settled in New Netherlands “in the service of the West India Company, as boatswain of the ship Prince Maurice. He bought a house in New Amsterdam in 1645.” In February, 1690, his five sons (one of whom was Dirk, the next in my family line) were “taken captive by the French and Indians and carried to Canada,” but they were “redeemed” the following year.  Research provided by family.(1844–?)Catherine Miller
