He moved to Brooklyn in 1938 and was drafted in 1944. After his discharge, he attended college under the G.I. Bill, but tiring of school, he apprenticed himself to a bricklayer and worked at this occupation for several years. In 1953, he moved to San Francisco where he married in 1954 and graduated from the State College in 1958. He drifted into clerical work at the V.A. Hospital where he worked until his retirement in 1985, and then moved to Laguna Hills. Gordon describes himself as a man of \"somewhat solitary and contemplative disposition who is hopelessly addicted to 'doodling.'\"\" Gordon further writes, \"Through my 'meanderings' on paper, I attempt to work off any feelings of anxiety, anger and envy.\" (see letter 24 APR 1988). Gordon also subscribes to the concept that what is observed is influenced by the presence of the observer. His drawings become, then, an exercise in \"self-observation\" and an attempt to transform what is evil in his own nature into good. He considers this self-observation the last available frontier of exploration, and one that is accessible to the layman--whatever face develops as he sits down ot \"doodle\" is his own face at that given moment.
