1511821053Sarah Ann Garges18351901Sarah AnnGargeshttps://collection.folkartmuseum.org/internal/media/dispatcher/1955/fullAccording to family tradition, the maker's initials "SAG" stand for Sarah Ann Garges and the 1853 date stitched below is the date of her engagement.  The Garges family owned a homestead in Doylestown, her grandfather living on an adjoining farm.  Her father, Abraham, was a member of the old Mennonite church.  He married Leah Ruth and they had eight children, including Sarah Ann Garges.  She married Oliver Perry Shutt (1820-1907) on Nov. 2, 1854.  Sarah Ann may be the same Sarah Shutt who died Jan 1, 1887, at the age of 53 and who is buried in Pleasantville cemetary.  The farm scene on the Garges quilt are reminiscent of the vignettes on the diploma issued by the Bucks County Agricultural Society in connection with their agricultural fairs. Although the fairs were largely displays of animals and machinery, they also encouraged the display of home manufacture of textiles.(1835–1901)Sarah Ann GargesSarah Ann "Sallie" Garges Shutt
