Every inch of his small-scale works is filled with detail; the tangle of lines made with ball-point pen reveals faces, figures, and abstract patterns. Embedded in the dimensional surfaces, some reaching Escheresque illusions of perspective, are references to drugs, confinement, and violence. Something monstrous is always emerging from the murky darkness of White’s work, as he lets these haunting visions unfold.White was born in 1959 in Fall River, Massachusetts. He has said that his early experiences with drug use influence the hallucinatory nature of his work. Since adolescence, he has spent time in and out of incarceration, and he started drawing while he was in prison, taking art classes to enrich his practice. Some of his early work involved more standard depictions of flowers and animals for selling to fellow inmates, but he expanded over time to increasingly intricate visions in ink. He stated of his work, as quoted in Phyllis Kornfeld’s book Cellblock Visions: Prison Art in America (1997), “It’s not my mind that gives me these messages, it’s my soul. I want my work to be recognized for what it truly is, as pure as snow.”His work has been shown since the mid-1990s in exhibitions on prison art, and in 1995 he received the first prize in drawing in Prison Life Magazine’s annual national art contest.Allison C.
