He was not educated beyond second grade and his paintings are often inspired by illustrations in children's books, executed on a variety of household materials. Tolliver's paintings have been exhibited at the Philadelphia College of Art; the National Museum of American Art; the Brooklyn Museum; and the Museum of American Folk Art.
