Roller printing was first patented in 1785.  Because of repeat and registration problems, the earliest examples feature only one or two colors.  note in file from great granddaughter'Eliz Higgs My Great / Grandmother / Died Dec. 23 1872 / aged 77 years - 4 mo - 16 day / Born 1795 / Married 22 years [underlined] / 1817 - Quilt was / made before [underlined] 1817 / 1966 / 1817 [underlined] / 149 years and more / is age of the quilt'from granddaughter Irene Miller'Grandmother / Elizabeth Higgs. / Died December 23, 1872 / aged 77 years, 4 months / and 16 days. / Made this before she / was married, was in / her teens when married. / I think mother said / she was 22 when she / married.' </value><value>(including construction) Quilted bedcovering in glazed cotton (furnishing?) chintz.  Front pattern of two pheasants with crossed tails on branch with large blooms and twining flowers either side.  On background full of lozenge and dot repeat; the pattern with a 15" x 24" repeat.  Constructed of four 24" lengths pieced together, the underside fabric turned over top four sides for self-bias finished edges. Back: Glazed cotton chintz (furnishing?) fabric.  Large wreath repeat with pink and yellow roses intersperced with smaller wreath on blue picotage ground with blank leaves and single roses.  The whole on cream ground.  Back pieced from four lengths, as well.  Loosely quilted in a diamond pattern. Mauve ball fringe edging four sides added later. No filler, backing over top at top and bottom edges; side edge, top and backing turned in.  Top, roller-printed fabric, c.1830; back, roller-printed fabric c. 1840.
