But rather than building up graduated layers to assume the typical pyramidal forms with crenellated edges, the backboard is a flat piece of wood, possibly from a cigar box, with applied animal and figural cut-outs. These are titled \u201cwild horse,\u201d \u201cJoe Jeanette,\u201d \u201cFrank Moran,\u201d and \u201cJess Willard\u201d. The three men were famous boxers of the early twentieth century. Joe Jeanette (1879\u20131958) was considered one of the best heavyweight boxers of his era. Because he was African American he was not permitted to compete for the world title though he won the World Colored Heavyweight Championship in 1909. Frank Moran (1887\u20131967) was a boxer and film actor. He fought twice for the World Heavyweight Championship and appeared in more than 135 movies during his film career. Jess Willard (1881\u20131968), known as the Pottawatomie Giant, knocked out Jack Johnson in 1915 for the heavyweight title. In 1919 he lost the title to Jack Dempsey. It is not clear what \u201cwild horse\u201d refers to, but the wild horse race is one of the oldest rodeo events, dating to the 1800s as a competition among ranchers to saddle a wild horse and be the first to ride it across the finish line.","Object information is a work in progress and may be updated with new research.
