Stamped \u201cW.A. Lewis, Galesville, NY.\u201d Signed W.A. Lewis stoneware is scarce. W.A. Lewis joined his brother Otto\u2019s pottery around 1852. According to William C. Ketchum and Warren F. Broderick \u201cWilliam A Lewis operated the Galesville pottery alone from 1858 until 1860, when the Census taken that year lists him as a \u2018farm laborer\u2019 living in Greenwich. A number of blue-decorated stoneware vessels exist bearing the mark \u2018WALEWIS/GALESVILLE\u2019; many of them have attractive, sometimes elaborate floral decorations. William A. Lewis appears to have given up the potter's trade and worked the remainder of his life as a farmer\u2026At some time Frederick A. Gale (1810\u20131882) become directly involved in the Galesville pottery's management, although he was not a potter by trade. [Frederick Gale was painted by Ammi Phillips at the age of four or five.
