The medal includes the name of his Mark Lodge, “Temple M[ark] M[aster] Lodge,” constituted in February 1810 in Bennington, Vermont. The side with the engraved names shows a burning bush in the center, part of the degree symbolism. Also on this side is a banner reading “Sit Lux et Lux Fuit” (let there be light and there was light). The other side shows Hovey’s mark—a three-rung ladder with the steps representing faith, hope, and charity. The ladder is enclosed in a circle with initials around the edge, “HTWSSTKS,” signifying a mnemonic for the lesson taught during the ritual.
