In the genre manner, it records a narrative of economic industry- hunting and shipping - and the dangers of such a livlihood. The subject was popular in the late 19th century and appears on lithographs and paintings, some by Charles S. Raleigh, a painter of ships and scenes of the Arctic. Two of his pictures, \" Law of the wild,\" 1881, and \" chilly observation,\" 1889, are in the National Gallery of Art. They can be compared in style, compositon and palette with \" shooting the polar Bear in the Arctic.\" The former have the artist's signature in the lower left corner.
