As befits a man of property, Mr. Winsor holds a key ring and it's interesting to note that this likeness corresponds to his large scale portrait also taken by Hathaway. Two men in colonial costume can be seen sailing in the harbor. One of them holds a shotgun aimed at a flock of geese flying above the house; at least one bird has been hit and is falling toward the water. Outside the white and blue fence surrounding the Winsor House, a woman carrying buckets and a young boy can be seen, perhaps a reference to Joshua's son, Seth, who would have been thirteen years of age at the time the painting was commissioned. A variety of shipping appears in the distance. The whole scene is composed above a painted black border with the title limned in white in a fine hand.
