Young Man with Riding Crop
The stages between childhood and adulthood were the least likely to be captured in American folk portraiture of the nineteenth century. This nearly life-size portrait shows a young boy poised just on the edge of childhood. The cornucopia-shape vase overflowing with flowers symbolizes the fruitful life ahead, while the crop in his hand hints at the man he will become.
