Hawaiian Flag Quilt
Hawaiian flag quilts, known in Hawaiian as Ku’u Hae Aloha (“My Beloved Flag” or “Lost Beloved Flag”), may have originated as early as 1843, when the independent Kingdom of Hawaii was still considered a British protectorate. As seen in this example, Hawaiian quilts often combine piecework with conventional appliqué techniques and intricate reverse appliqué.
