Description

The identity of the Flying Angel Artist has not been established, but he is responsible for creating a large number of exuberantly decorated birth and baptismal certificates—Taufscheine, in German—for families in southeastern Pennsylvania during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This Taufschein records the birth of Carl Fritz on July 28, 1807. As with most of the artist's other full-page frakturs, the text is incorporated into a double-ringed circle, with a heart at its bottom. The German verse within the heart reads, "This heart of mine shall be all Thine, O Jesus." On either side of the central circle, the artist has drawn two whimsical figures of flying angels, from which his common designation is derived. In common with other creators of fraktur, the artist introduces the figures of birds and lush floral motifs to complete his composition.
