The blocks alternate a pieced capital D surrounded by triangles in an Economy Patch variation pattern, with embroidered blocks bearing the signatures of sometimes dozens of people in a block. The \"D\" blocks are all consistent in format; the embroidered blocks vary; some are completely filled with names, others are arranged in a square configuration with open space between names; the four blocks nearest the center inscription are embroidered in the shape of the capital letter D to echo the pieced pattern. At the center of the entire composition is a block that reads: Admiral Dewey Commander of United States Navy. It is all this information on the quilt that suggests it was made to commemorate his leadership role in the war. The blocks are made of cotton is one shade of teal blue and one shade of red. The foundation is white. The colored border at the exterior of the quilt is a wine shade differing from the red at the interior. The overall scheme is patriotic, in keeping with the subject matter of the quilt. An unusual element is the fact that the block with the Dewey inscription has been incorporated into the quilt upside down (if one is to read the capital letter D properly as it reads vertically and facing to the right). The quilting throughout varies. Along the borders there is straight line quilting in triple rows about 1/4\" apart. The blocks have quilting in single straight line rows about 1/4\" apart. Around the areas of white in the field are quilted floral motifs.  ","TEXTILE"]},"collections":{"label":"Collections","value":"Textiles"},"geography":{"label":"Geography","value":"Center Point"},"id":{"label":"Id","value":"153616"},"geographyState":{"value":"Indiana"},"thesconceptsMaterials":{"label":"Materials","value":["http://nodes.emuseum.com/BU1BGBAG/apis/emuseum/network/v1/vocabularies/termMaster20774","http://nodes.emuseum.com/BU1BGBAG/apis/emuseum/network/v1/vocabularies/termMaster13016","http://nodes.emuseum.com/BU1BGBAG/apis/emuseum/network/v1/vocabularies/termMaster8975","http://nodes.emuseum.com/BU1BGBAG/apis/emuseum/network/v1/vocabularies/termMaster8973"]},"geographyCountry":{"value":"United States"},"onview":{"label":"On View","value":"0"},"people":{"label":"Artist / Maker","value":{"displayOrder":"1","personRole":"Artist","personID":"196","content":"The Mite Society (Ladies' Aid), United Brethren Church"}},"classifications":{"label":"Classification(s)","value":"Textiles"},"textEntries":{"label":"Text Entries","value":["Object information is a work in progress and may be updated with new research.
