Aaron Mountz was one of many children fascinated by the older carver's whittling skills. After Schimmel's death, Mountz tried his own hand at the animal and other carvings most closely identified with Schimmel's work. He carved only a few dozen sculptures that are known today, in between his efforts to make the family farm a profitable venture. Unfortunately, he was unable to keep the farm operating and strain caused him to suffer a nervous breakdown. Mountz spent his last years in a state mental facility where Schimmel himself had died years before. Mountz's carvings lack the spontaneous vitality of Schimmel's carvings, but are carefully crafted and appealing works on their own merit. They are characterized by a meticulous crosshatching of the surface to delineate areas such as feathers and fur.","Object information is a work in progress andmay be updated with new research.
