Description

Stars and moons are common symbols that have many different meanings within American fraternal groups and the culture at large. This finial combines a crescent moon and two stars, but does not display additional symbols that are specific to a particular fraternal group. Thus, its purpose remains open to speculation.

Stacy C. Hollander, "Star Finial," exhibition label for Mystery and Benevolence: Masonic and Odd Fellows Folk Art from the Kendra and Allan Daniel Collection. Stacy C. Hollander, curator. New York: American Folk Art Museum, 2016.
