Description

Freemason Joseph Ford French painted this view of his lodge building (which is no longer standing) in Abington, Massachusetts, in 1893. French joined the town’s John Cutler Lodge in 1860, shortly after it was chartered. He later served as its Master from 1879 to 1881. French was a house and sign painter. He used his talent to skillfully render an accurate image of the building in great detail and proudly labeled it with his name as artist and the year it was presented to the lodge. He cleverly indicated the location of the lodge through signs reading “Abington” and “Rockland” on a trolley passing on the road. Known as “Hatherly Hall,” the lodge started meeting there in 1863. French was listed as the building’s agent in 1867; its three-hundred-seat hall was available for rentals at a rate of $6.
