Description

The popular pattern known as Double Wedding Ring is generally associated with bright cotton pieced quilts from the Depression era and later. This candlewick spread is dated 1897, indicating that the all-over composition of overlapping rings has a longer history in textiles. The sheared candlewick embroidery, a technique known as tufting, has fluffed up with exposure to moisture, anticipating the taste for chenille bedcovers that was to ensue during the 1930s to 1950s. Coincidentally, this was the heyday of the Double Wedding Ring pattern.
