Description

African American artist Purvis Young regularly used found materials to create. In this work, the halo references spirituality. It is a key element in a visual statement that is not simply a literal depiction of prisoners joined together on a chain gang but one that also references slavery. The repeated and sinuous calligraphic lines—hallmarks of Young's unique artistic signature—create a dynamic experience for the viewer.
