Description

Women hold a place of special importance in Thornton Dial’s world. In this work, a woman wraps her arms tightly around a blue bird. This bird is neither an eagle, associated with money, nor a nesting bird, linked with the role of woman as childbearer. Rather, it stands for freedom—woman’s ability to soar, unencumbered by issues of race, gender, and social class. It is a symbol of the woman herself, who must defend and protect her freedom and individuality and thus proudly maintain her identity and the possibility of realizing her potential.
