Description

The majority of Amish quilts in the museum’s collection were made between 1920 and 1940 in the Midwest, particularly Indiana and Ohio. Quilts from this area are distinguished by dark backgrounds (typically dark blue or black) used to provide a strong contrast to the bold reds, yellows, blues, and greens the makers frequently selected for their patterns, as seen on this Lone Star Quilt. While the Amish often are associated with dark, conservative colors, they frequently used bright hues in their clothing, particularly dresses and shirts made for children, as well as for their remarkable quilts.
